Blue Man Group but make it fashion
Kanye West has been pretty quiet when it comes to wild fashion statements of late, having traded in last year’s too-small – and then ridiculously big – pool slides for the altogether more subdued hues of his uber cult-y Sunday Service uniform. That all changed this weekend, however, when he debuted a new lewk on the last day of Miami Art Basel, which took place this weekend.
As part of his new, Vanessa Beecroft-directed opera Mary, West appeared on-stage wearing a shimmering, billowing silver gown, with his entire head and hands painted silver – think Blue Man Group but make it fashion, we guess?
Having posted a passage from the bible reading “And the angel said unto her, fear not Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus” to his Twitter earlier in the day, it became apparent that Mary was West’s take on the birth of Christ – which makes sense given the whole thing was giving off some heavy primary school Nativity vibes.
Mary follows in the footsteps of earlier opera Nabuchadnezzar, also directed by Beecroft, which debuted at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl last week. Seemingly, the two operas precede a new album from ‘Ye, named Jesus Is Born, which set to drop on Christmas Day – when else?
