Five words: gold thigh-high knife boots
Michelle Obama has long been a woman of style. With her chic tailored suits and her simple shift dresses – usually the work of American designers, who she ceaselessly championed during her tenure as First Lady – she’s graced countless ‘most stylish’ lists over the course of the last decade. But, dear reader, that does not mean we (or likely anyone else) was ready for the scalding hot look she just served up.
We’re talking draped yellow silk. We’re talking gold thigh-high knife boots. We’re talking BALENCIAGA.
Appearing in conversation with Sarah Jessica Parker in support of her recently released memoir Becoming, Obama opted for pieces from Demna Gvasalia’s SS19 collection for the iconic Spanish house, and it’s safe to say we are one hundred per cent living for it.
During the conversation, which unsurprisingly sold out NYC’s Barclay Centre, she and Parker discussed her time in and out of the White House, the difficulties she faced, and, yes, fashion. And there’s good news! Gvasalia is seemingly a pretty great guy.
“I didn’t want to wear the clothes of someone who didn’t have a good spirit,” she explained to SJP. “You could hear these things, you could hear how they treated my staff, or how they treated their workers. So everyone I wore, as far as I knew, had a good spirit.”
Sadly, our list of the most stylish people of 2018 is long since published, but, now she's free of the expectations and obligations that come with being First Lady, we’re hoping there will be plenty more where that came from. In which case, 2019’s top spot is right there for the taking. Better watch your back, Jeff.
