When it comes to never working with children or animals, fashion clearly isn’t getting the memo. This season alone has seen a band of children soundtrack the Eckhaus Latta show, and just last night a cockatoo modelled at Gucci. Joining the gang today was Marine Serre, who also enlisted children for her SS19 show.
Held outside at an elevated walkway near where Serre lives, the latest show featured more of the crescent moon-printed spandex looks – or ‘FutureWear’ – that the designer has become recognised for. This season though, in addition to the models, it also appeared on children who also modelled in the show who were inspired by people she sees when walking in her neighbourhood. Riding on the shoulders of models, carried in their arms, or walking alone, the Serre-wearing kid models also joined in the action this season. “It’s like the catwalk of everyday that we’re all in,” Serre explains backstage after the show.
Elsewhere, there were two new introductions – menswear, and a new couture line, Red Line. Closing the show, were a number of ‘high fashion’ looks created out of repurposed materials like utility jackets or diving suits. For Serre, it was important to introduce a new line, but separate from the pre-existing Gold (avant-garde RTW), Green (upcycled eco-futurism), and White (core brand RTW) lines. “The idea was to make it more clear for everyone, because we’re a small house just starting out,” Serre explains.
