Over the past six months, upcoming independent brands from across the UK have been determined to snag the prize. So, who got the top spot? The joint recipients of the Fashion Discovery Panel prize were brands Wesley Harriott and Lyph, both of whom will launch their collections on ASOS for a minimum of two seasons, receive one-to-one mentorship with industry experts on how to grow their brand, and a £50k cash bonus to get it all started. Wesley Harriott, whose work is all about dressing powerful women with striking silhouettes, caught the judges’ attention with its originality and entrepreneurial spirit. Lyph, a unisex brand, offers clothing and accessories with a strong focus on customisation combined with functionality, and judges were excited by the brand’s business-minded focus. The winner of the People’s Choice Award (a prize added to the competition for the first time this year), after receiving an outstanding 4,495 votes from the public, was Desree Akorahson with her 60s inspired scuba-wear. Her collection will also be available on ASOS in the coming months. A very well deserved congratulations all round then, and keep an eye on the ASOS site for collections from each winning brand – and for all you budding designers out there, the call for next year’s entries.
