Including Tyler’s new new hair, Lorde’s political statement and Beyoncé’s tribute to the Black Panthers
Last night saw the 60th annual Grammy awards play out at New York’s Madison Square Garden. Political messages were high up on the agenda for the evening, as stars including Cardi B, Snoop Dogg and Cher read passages from White House exposé Fire and Fury, and attendees pinned white roses to their gowns in support of the Time's Up movement. Then there were Lana del Rey and Lorde, who took it one step further in their statement-making gowns. Here are the looks that got everyone talking.
TYLER DEBUTED HIS NEW HAIR
The ever stylish Tyler, The Creator turned up in a pale blue coat, monogrammed Louis Vuitton scarf and a pair of Converse All Stars which he’d written “Double My Luggage” and drawn a flower on to, in a nod to his Best Rap Album nomination for Scum Fuck Flower Boy. The pièce de résistance was his new leopard-inspired hair, which he revealed as he took off his Russian-style Ushanka hat.
THERE WAS A V TACKY ANTI-ABORTION STATEMENT
Having turned up to 2017’s Grammys wearing a gown emblazoned with pro-Trump message “Make America Great Again”, Joy Villa (yeah, us neither) took the opportunity to make a similarly controversial statement this year. The singer opted for a floor-length white dress which had a fetus painted to the hem, demonstrating her pro-life views, and finished the look with a ‘Choose Life’ purse. Why is she still getting invited?
CARDI B WORE 90S-STYLE, RAINBOW MOSCHINO
Cardi B took to the stage in 90s-esque Moschino bra, shorts and bomber jacket combo to perform collaborative track “Finesse” with the night’s big winner, Bruno Mars. The “Bodak Yellow” singer also read a passage from Michael Wolf’s White House exposé Fire and Fury alongside Snoop Dogg, John Legend, Cher and Hillary Clinton.
RIHANNA WORE 275,000 CRYSTALS (NBD)
RiRi’s performance was (obviously) pure fire, as she took to the stage to sing “Wild Thoughts” in a custom made Adam Selman dress that was encrusted with just a few crystals (275,000 – a whole 45,000 more than that CFDAs look). Later she changed into a high-shine PVC mac-style dress from Alexandre Vauthier’s SS18 collection as she and Kendrick Lamar picked up the Best Rap Sung Performance award for “Loyalty.”
BEYONCE’S LOOK WAS INSPIRED BY THE BLACK PANTHERS
Beyoncé enlisted frequent collaborator Nicolas Jebran to create an asymmetric, floor-length gown that referenced the Black Panther movement, as the designer set out to create “a moment, a memorable design with meaning, because it’s more than just a gown.” The dress – which featured powerful, broad shoulders – was finished with the addition of a pair of Alain Mikli cat-eye glasses and a wide-brimmed black hat. It was Blue Ivy, dressed in a white wrap-around dress that stole the show though, as she told her over-enthusiastic parents to keep the noise down. LOL.
SZA NOMINATED FOR FIVE AWARDS, WINS ZERO
SZA turned up in a delicately feathered gown courtesy of Versace, but failed to win any awards despite being nominated for a massive FIVE.
LIL UZI VERT TALKED ABOUT GOSHA
Best New Artist nominee Lil Uzi Vert seemed v excited to be there, as he was interviewed by E!’s Giuliana Rancic on the red carpet. Asked what his plans were if he won the award, the rapper (who was serving Hot Topic realness in a pair of goth pants) responded that he had some of the new Burberry x Gosha Rubchinskiy collab in his sights – as well as some Pop Tarts.
LORDE STITCHED A JENNY HOLZER POEM ON HER DRESS
In place of a white rose, which attendees wore to show their support for Time’s Up, Lorde instead opted to attach an excerpt from conceptual artist Jenny Holzer’s “Inflammatory Essays” to the back of her red dress.
LANA DEL REY’S COSMIC LOOK WAS INSPIRED BY HEDY LAMARR
Lana hit the red carpet in custom Gucci, wearing a gown and headpiece inspired by inventor and movie star Hedy Lamarr. Lamarr and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for allied torpedoes before she was snapped up by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in the early 1930s. Get you a girl that can do both springs to mind.
ELTON JOHN SHOWED UP IN GUCCI

After it was announced last week that Alessandro Michele would be on costume duties as part of Elton’s upcoming tour, the singer turned up to the 60th Grammys repping the brand. The fact that he could potentially be the fourth member of Migos did not go unnoticed.
JADEN SMITH ROCKED A PAIR OF ‘UGLY’ SNEAKERS
Jaden Smith teamed his patchwork custom G-Star jeans with a pair of SS18 Louis Vuitton kicks. Smith has proved himself an advocate of the ugly sneaker movement in the last few months, having been spotted in Balenciaga’s Triple S at the end of last year.
Though there were some big fashion winners (hi, Beyoncé, RiRi and Lorde), 2017 was a disappointing year when it came to female winners, as just one, Alessia Cara, took home a major award. What 2018’s Grammys have in store for us remains to be seen, but we hope those that were snubbed last night take home what they deserve next year – and that Rihanna tops the 275,000 crystals she wore this year too.
