Recent recipients of the Ecco Domini award for Women's Fashion, twin sisters Daphne and Vera Correll have developed an oeuvre of nuance and subtlety by imbuing each piece with a sense of wonder that comes from their own creation. Working out of their Lower East Side studio and workshop, they approach design with an eye towards experiment and a sincerity that is evident in the intimate level of their handicraft. "All the pieces are hand knit, hand dyed. We're doing all the patchwork; hand picking the dresses… at some point everything goes through our hands," says Vera Correll of their first formally presented collection. "We started off choosing materials and colours and we were really into choosing a colour gradient of lights to darks, working a lot with opposing elements like blues and reds; complimentary contrasts." A good motto to work by for those blending the worlds of art and craft.
