Blooming Fire number one at Dazed,” the model exclaims, her eyes sparkling. “If you’re a cute girl at Dazed – and if you’re not at Dazed and you’re still a cute girl or just anybody – if the Dazed girls say, it goes.” Throughout the years, one of the things that has drawn people to Hadid is her warm, outspoken and open nature. From advocating for Palestinian liberation, to opening up about her struggles with her mental and physical health, she has become a beloved figure – like a new people’s princess for the TikTok generation (or the “Princess of Nazareth”, as her father once famously dubbed her). But it was her struggles with chronic illness, in particular, that led Hadid to create her new brand. Launched last year, ‘Ôrebella (pronounced “aura-bella”) is a collection of four fragrances – Window2Soul, Salted Muse, Blooming Fire and Nightcap – which harness nature’s healing powers for both skin and soul. With modern medicine often letting down people with chronic health conditions, it’s not uncommon to look to natural ingredients to find more holistic forms of grounding and healing. For Hadid, that meant the essential oils that had become a meditative part of her daily routine. Unlike more traditional perfumes, Hadid’s scents mix these aromatherapy oils with a “ôrelixir” moisturising base, made from a combination of olive, shea, jojoba and camellia oils. Completely alcohol-free, ‘Ôrebella banned over 1,300 aggravating ingredients and chemicals to ensure the fragrances are safe for even the most sensitive skin. Due to their unique formula, wearers are encouraged to “shake to activate” before applying them to the skin, then rubbing on like a body oil. Last week, the brand officially launched in the UK, debuting exclusively at Selfridges. Catching up with Hadid at the London pop-up, she is exactly how she comes across online: sweet, genuine and cheekily funny. “My first scent memory was probably horse poop mucking the stalls, I can’t even think of any scent before that,” she says, with a loud laugh. “Or my Teta’s fresh mint tea is very nostalgic. And Dutch cheese.” Born to a Palestinian father and Dutch mother, Hadid often references her heritage. For the fragrances, this was no different. “[These scents are] an ode to everybody, every person, every feeling and every emotion in my life,” she says. This comes through the strongest in Salted Muse, one of ‘Ôrebella’s most successful scents. With key notes of olive tree, cedarwood and sea salt, it is reminiscent of a salty post-swim nap on a warm summer afternoon. “This really is a take on my Arab family and my Arab world. Of course, I had to put olives somewhere to be able to represent my Palestinian family,” explains Hadid. “We put olive oil in just about everything, to be honest. I wanted to put olive oil in the moisturising base, but this has true olive in it and sea salt.” Another fan favourite (and the Dazed team’s personal favourite) is Blooming Fire. If you could capture the freeing, far-flung ‘holiday feeling’ in a bottle, this is what you would end up with. “Growing up, I went to Tahiti once, but it was my sister’s favourite place because she used to go there with her friends, and I would always smell this Tahitian Monoï. For me, it was something that brought the beach. It brought the smell of the sunscreen,” Hadid says. Layered with rich bergamot, patchouli and cedarwood, it is combined with the lightness of jasmine and Tahitian Monoï. “I feel like it’s the perfect scent for when you’re lying on the beach. It’s right when the sun goes down and you’re wrapped up in your towel. This, for me, is 100 per cent the sweetest, most beautiful scent that we have,” she says. Courtesy of 'Ôrəbella When we speak about Window2Soul, she lights up. “She is my baby, my lover, I’m obsessed with her,” she says of her everyday scent. Between notes of tonka bean, lemon and mint, the fragrance is brought to life with the white flower top note. “Growing up, the smell of gardenia just always gave me a nostalgic feeling. Gardenias are extremely expensive, so it is hard to have them year-round, so I wanted something you can put in a bottle and be able to have that is accessible to everybody, but also smells really rich, exciting, beautiful and fresh,” she says. “That is what was really important about this, that it was not too intense but it was still happy.” Months after the original three scents were released, Hadid introduced a new fragrance to the ‘Ôrebella family. Named after the “first love” of her life, her horse in high school, Nightcap, the latest fragrance is more of a grown-up musky scent. “I wanted to do a beautiful, sexy, old-school vanilla,” she says. “My favourite part of ginger is the spiciness. I knew I wanted to have those octaves and levels when we working with the notes. The vanilla for me in here is a top hit, but then you get to all of the different smells.” The spice is heightened with a warm layer of sandalwood and cardamom inspired by her teta (grandmother), who “used to make the most incredible cardamom tea you’ve ever had.” How we show up in the world changes how we see ourselves. At the centre of ‘Ôrebella is the tagline “reveal your alchemy”, an ode to personal transformation. When discussing how different scents can match different parts of ourselves, she says: “To be honest, any day that I wake up and don‘t really feel like myself, when I want to be unique [or] feel like myself again, I‘ll put on one of the fragrances I feel fits my personality for the day or fits my outfit for the day. I think that it brings uniqueness and character to who we are. We feel and smell the way we want to be for the rest of the day”. Courtesy of 'Ôrəbella Throughout our conversation, her authenticity shines through. At a time when a different celebrity brand seems to pop up every single day, it is only with a level of discernment that you can make a distinction between a brand that feels like a random commercial endeavour and when it is an authentic, true passion project. ‘Ôrebella strikes me as the latter. Alongside the brand, Hadid also launched The 'Ôrəbella Alchemy Foundation, a charity initiative working to support charities such as The Lower Eastside Girls Club and PATH International. With just four fragrances, she transports wearers into her own world and memories, but also helps tap into the nostalgia we all have for different reasons. “I hope they make you feel something,” says Hadid, speaking on how she hopes ‘Ôrəbella is received. “For me, they make me feel different versions of nostalgia, and I do believe we have a collective consciousness between all of us and collective experiences of different memories that we've all had separately, together, but different and the same.” Below, shop all four ‘Ôrebella scents exclusively at Selfridges and find out which spell Bella believes each fragrance would cast. 1/4 You may like next 1/4 1/4 Courtesy of 'ÔrəbellaBlooming Fire BELLA'S SPELL: "Blooming Fire would be you have a natural perfect tan and a natural perfect glow.
