TikTok flips the classic cat eye in its latest viral make-up trend

Simple, edgy, and impactful – the reverse cat eye has previously been seen on Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, and more

From the reincarnation of the Y2K zig zag part, to flared out duck nails, shaggy wolf cuts, and E-girl hair horns – beauty trends seem to blow up quickly once they hit TikTok. The latest craze, the reverse cat eye, seems to be no different.

With #reversecateye reaching over 6.7 million views on the app so far, the trend is a twist on the classic cat eye make-up look which features dark eyeliner smudged out from the lower lash line into a wing in the outer and inner corners of the eye. Lucky for us, the only tools required seem to be a dark pencil liner and a small brush to smudge it out to your desired level of drama.

While the reverse cat eye look has previously been spotted on Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Kristen Stewart, and Charli XCX, its recent popularity comes from a viral TikTok by MUA and YouTuber PaintedbySpencer. “This reverse cat eye is a fun and edgy twist to the original cat eye, and I think it looks really flattering on everyone,” said the artist in an in-depth tutorial on YouTube.

Some TikTok users, however, are crediting South Asian and Arab people for the look due to similarities to commonly-worn eye make-up looks created with kohl liner. “Bollywood girlies have been doing this kajol look for years,” said one user on Spencer’s TikTok. “You killed it!” Another user responded, noting: “Desis and Arab women both!”

Otherwise, the look seems to especially flatter hooded eyes, as it creates an impactful wing without requiring any product on the lid.

Here, we rounded up some of the best looks of the trend. Check them out below.
