At 42-years-old, she barely looks a day older than appearing in cult film Empire Records in 1995. So, like us, you were probably overjoyed to hear that the actress was sharing her daily beauty regime as part of Vogue’s Beauty Secrets series. That was, until it actually started, and you quickly realised, this was no wake-up-and-go, but, in fact, a process with no less than 25 steps, and almost 30 products. Starting with a scrunchie – made out of an old Hermès scarf, obviously – the routine shows Tyler applying two different cleansers, before exfoliating and then enjoying a homemade green juice. She then moves on to a hydrating mask, CBD oil (she takes for anxiety), hyaluronic acid, a variety of face masks, mists, and serums – all before she applies her make-up. Despite mostly positive comments on the video, some people were overwhelmed by the number of steps and amount of different products involved. “Obviously has a lot of free time on her hands,” says one user on Twitter in response to the tutorial. “By the time she has reached Step 12 I’ve already put in a full day of work.” It’s a lot. In fact, MarketWatch broke down all of the products used in the tutorial – including items from Glossier, MAC, Clinique, and Charlotte Tilbury – and estimated it to be around $1,700-worth. “The more I do this stuff, the better I feel inside,” explains the actress in the video on her lengthy routine. “The more calm I feel, the better my skin looks on the outside.” In an age where conversations around self-care are happening more frequently than ever, it begs the question – should it be commodified and be all about buying products?
