Discover them here. When we think of make-up we usually think of it as a tool to enhance our features or to make us appear more beautiful. 28-year-old Moscow-based make-up artist Sam Schavlev is challenging this notion with his mutant beauty looks. “Make-up is not just about something beautiful,” he says, “it is about something ugly as well.” Starting off with creating everyday make-up looks, and sharing them on Instagram as a form of self-expression, Sam now uses the platform to showcase his supernatural looks, racking up 74.6k followers in the process. From turning eyes upside down to adding extra nostrils, Sam distorts his model's faces, sometimes beyond recognition, using a combination of dramatic make-up effects and photo manipulation. Then there are his own looks. Adding chiaroscuro-like effects to his shaved head, Sam uses light and shadow to mimic alien like implants – a feature he accentuates with a flesh coloured nose piece and matching homemade ear weights. “I want people to feel uncomfortable when they see my art,’ Sam explains. “The more you look, the more all the things you thought to be right about it start to feel wrong, and all that should be wrong start to feel right.” What is it you do and why do you do it?I'm a make-up and visual artist. I want to show make-up from my point of view. What’s your career highlight?I'm not sure my career is bright enough already to think about highlights. What are you working on at the moment?I am always on a path for self-discovery. Tomorrow you wake up with another face of your choice. Whose is it and why?My own face but improved with real shapes that I create with my own make-up everyday. You have to donate a feature/limb of your body to an icon of yours. You get nothing in return. What feature/limb do you give and why? This question is creepier than all my crazy distorted make-up looks. Is there anyone who wants to own the bag made out of my tattooed skin from my back? It's 30 years from now. You stumble home at 3am and catch your reflection in the fridge door. What do you look like?I can't tell what I look like, but I can tell what I certainly don't look like: I don't look like an ordinary person. If you could have a new sense on top of your existing ones, what would it be?To feel and understanding things beyond the 3rd dimension. Escape the algorithm!
