In a recent Facebook post, Banks said she doesn’t want her “legacy to die on the internet”. She stated: “I'm seriously tired of people’s feelings. I'm tired of seeing their overly sensitive reactions and responses to everything. I'm tired of having everything I say or do be monitored and I'm tired of being told how I should be behaving. I'm quitting Facebook, and any other form of social media that allows me to engage with people. “My legacy can't live and die on the Internet,” she concluded. “Goodbye. For good.” Banks’ Twitter account was suspended back in May after she posted racist and homophobic slurs aimed at Zayn Malik. Although she apologised, widespread backlash meant the rapper was dropped from London-based festival Born and Bred. She also recently used her Facebook to call out Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga for allegedly copying her work. In one post, Banks wrote, “FUN FACT: ‘SLAY-Z’ is a nickname given to Azealia Banks by one of her fans in 2014. a play on the Z in Banks' name, and her propensity to release consistently awesome music, the nickname was lifted from her twitter account and featured as one of the characters in Taylor Swift's 'Bad Blood' video. Azealia Banks reclaimed the nickname upon the arrival of of her self-released 2016 mixtape titled ‘SLAY-Z’.” Then, turning her attention to Lady Gaga, she added another not-very-fun-actually-very-awkward fact: "FUN FACT: Azealia Banks created her own genre of music called ‘Witch-Hop.’ Coined by the success of 2012's Fantasea Mixtape, Azealia considers her music to be inspired by the invisible world. 3 days after 'Witch-Hop' was declared by Azealia Banks to be a legitimate genre, Lady Gaga (also a fan of Azealia Banks) suspiciously titled her then upcoming studio album, ‘Artpop.’” In another post, she described herself as “the most widely criticised and widely ignored artist of all time”. Continuing, she said: “While her equally controversial male peers are given an excess of room and public forgiveness to express themselves, (be it through drug trafficking, gun violence, misogyny, domestic violence, homophobia etc,) Azealia Banks has been demonized by the public at large for simply… tweeting. Opponents of Banks often cite her ‘bad attitude’ as the reason for their avid disdain towards her.” She quit Twitter back in March, just after she blasted Malik. Previously, she had also called for Sarah Palin to be gangbanged by a group of “big veiny, ashy, black” dicks, and pledged allegiance to Donald Trump over his strict immigration policies. She bowed out with the tweet: “Ok, today, I'm finally making the decision to eject from social media. American media culture is honestly so disgusting and junky”. The rapper did flounce off her social media platforms back in 2012 and made a comeback (enjoyed by no one), so we’ll see how long Banks lasts IRL. Escape the algorithm!
