Just over a week ago, Miley Cyrus came out as pansexual. FYI, it means that the person feels attracted towards people of any sex or gender identity. Basically, pansexual people are attracted to people that may or may not identify as male or female so in that way it differs from bisexuality. Now people are identifying as such, step forward representations of pansexuality in pop culture – maybe starting with Spider-Man. He’s now spent years living as the character in the Amazing Spider-Man movies, so who better to know his inner workings than actor Andrew Garfield? The British-American actor told Mic that he hopes that the superhero, who has traditionally been portrayed as white and straight, won’t be bound by such conventions in the future. “I’m excited to get to the point where we don’t have to have this conversation, where we can have a pansexual Spider-Man,” Garfield said. “What are we so scared of? Why are we so, ‘No, it has to be this way, a man and a woman.’ Why is that even a conversation?” He continued, “We’re scared of things that aren’t us. Love is love. Skin is skin. Flesh is flesh. We’re all wrapped in the same thing. I have no preference.” Garfield’s been wondering about Spidey’s sexuality for a while. Back in 2013, he actually pitched the idea of a gay Spider-Man to Amazing Spider-Man producer, Matt Tolmach. It points to a more exciting future for the character – leaked Sony emails released earlier this year revealed that Spider-Man must not be homosexual, must not have sex before 16 and mustn’t do drugs or drink.
