Whether it’s CNN mistaking dildos for ISIS, or US retailers banning the Confederate flag because of its horrific history, ensigns are unexpectedly creeping back into collective consciousness and freaking everybody out. One flag that’s unsettling Vladimir Putin’s United Russia Party is the LGBT movement’s rainbow flag, a symbol of pride, sexuality and unity. Fighting fire with (pretty fucking weak) fire, the United Russia Party has struck back with a "straight flag", a flag that depicts the "nuclear family" and traditional family values. United Russia deputy Andrei Lisovenko told the Izvestia newspaper: "This is our response to same-sex marriage, to this mockery of the concept of the family. We have to warn against gay-fever at home and support traditional values in our country. We are speaking of the traditional family. We mean the average standard Russian family that is ours: mother, father and three children." The flag was launched alongside with the hashtag #realfamily, in case United Russia had left anyone confused as to what they were getting at. The flag was unveiled at The Annual Day of Family, Love and Fidelity and quickly drew attention from Russian bloggers who cast doubt on the flag’s originality, noticing that it bears a striking similarity to a flag made by an anti-gay marriage group in France.
