Arts+CultureNewsJennifer's Body scriptwriter Diablo Cody to pen Barbie filmWe're sensing the most feminist, Tumblr-friendly movie everShareLink copied ✔️March 5, 2015Arts+CultureNewsTextZing Tsjeng Now that everything from Lego to Battleship has had a film adapatation, it's time for Barbie to get its turn. Maybe Mattel got wise to the subversive, sly potential of the America's favourite doll after seeing Jeremy Scott's Moschino SS15 show, but the toy makers have opted for a pretty unusual choice of scriptwriter for its as-yet-untitled film: Diablo Cody, the feminist indie writer behind Juno and Jennifer's Body. Mattel and Sony Pictures hope that Cody's movie will be the start of a global live action franchise. "Diablo’s unconventionality is just what Barbie needs," Walter Parkes, a producer on the film, told Deadline. "It signals we’re going for a legitimately contemporary tone. We’re bringing her on because she had great ideas, but even more importantly, she truly loves Barbie." Thanks to dolls like White House Barbie and Astronaut Barbie, the doll is (nominally) about female empowerment – but she's also been accused of promoting terrible beauty standards and being generally bad for feminism all round. So picking Cody as a scriptwriter is an interesting choice, to say the least. Consider Cody, a Hollywood outsider who proudly calls herself a feminist, once moonlit as a stripper, is now in charge of reshaping the narrative of America's bestselling blonde toy. But it's also exciting for another reason: Cody created Jennifer's Body. Critically slammed when it first came out, the Megan Fox film has now emerged as the kind of post-feminist high school cult classic beloved by Tumblr geeks and cheesy horror fans everywhere. It also features this immortal scene: Word. We're hoping Barbie will get to do some maneating of her own. Liked this?
