Taken from the June 2013 issue of Dazed & Confused:
Up-and-coming Warsaw-based filmmaker Michal Marczak caused a stir with recent documentary Fuck for Forest, which goes close-in and personal with a Berlin-based charity of environmentalist pornographers. He’s now developing a new doc about wannabe astronauts – out-there dreamers of a different sort. For Cult Vault, he selected Polish predecessor Krzysztof Kieslowski’s 1979 drama Camera Buff, about a factory-worker whose newfound obsession with amateur filmmaking takes over his life.
“More and more voices have proclaimed that access to affordable cameras and editing equipment will empower a new group of filmmakers to tell intimate, personal stories that were difficult to express in the cumbersome analogue world. A handful of such films have surfaced, but audiences are mostly just swamped by quirky YouTube pet porn. Technology’s easy to master – the other bits are harder. That is why Camera Buff is maybe even more relevant now than it was on its release.”
