Do not ask Kanye to do a fucking NFT

The rapper is focused on ‘the real world’ rn

Stop asking Kanye West to do NFTs, OK? In an Instagram post of a scrawled-on piece of paper, the rapper expressed his views on the pricey digital drawings, writing, “Do not ask me to do a fucking NFT”. (Maybe he should make that into an NFT?)

The rapper – who has now legally changed his name to Ye – said he’s currently focused on “the real world” rather than the digital one. “My focus is on building real products in the real world. Real food. Real clothes. Real shelter,” he said.

He captioned the post: “Stop asking me to do NFT’s (sic) I’m not finna co-sign… For now I’m not on that wave I make music and products in the real world”.

Although he did caveat the post with an “ask me later”, thereby not ruling them out completely, Kanye’s response to NFTs is a welcome change from the swell of celebrities who seem like they’re getting paid to shill their ugly AF digital drawings, bored out of their minds about Bored Apes.

Reaction from social media has seen people speculating on how this could affect the price of NFTs overall (although given that each individual artwork trades according to multiple factors, this would be tricky to figure out). Kanye might be pleased to know, though, that NFTs of his anti-NFT image are already being sold on the marketplace OpenSea.

Produced by Future, and said to feature accused serial rapist and abuser Marilyn Manson, Ye’s Donda 2 album – the sequel to Donda – is set to arrive in February this year.

Read our piece about why the market-driven NFTs aren’t revolutionary, and why they’re certainly not the next chapter in art history.
