It only took one song – “Sweating”– to solidify Alewya as a future nightclub staple

Typically, it can take an artist years of music releases to officially “break through”, but it only took Alewya one song to solidify her as a future nightclub staple.

Born in Saudi Arabia and raised in Sudan, the British Egyptian-Ehtiopian singer, musician, and model was five years old when her family moved to the U.K. in search of a better life. Growing up in West London, Alewya found inspiration in the Arabic and African music that filled her household, as well as the American grunge and alt-rock of her older brother and the British dance music she’d later discover at various East London club venues. She also became immersed in the diverse diasporic sounds of the local Afro-Caribbean and Moroccan neighborhoods. Together, these disparate and distinctive influences come together to create something that is wholly and uncompromisingly “Alewya”.

In 2020, the artist released her pulsating debut single, “Sweating”, an ode to feeling yourself and a celebration of chemistry and sensual power. The Busy Twist-produced track offered not only a hypnotizing introduction, but conjured dance floor bliss amid lock-down, with a sweltering music video to match. Over the past year, the rising artist has also collaborated with the likes of Little Simz and Moses Boyd.

Though “Sweating” was released just last year, it’s hardly been the only string in the multi-talent’s bow. She is also a talented artist, and 2021 will see her go on tour with Little Simz too.
