Chelsea Manning is back in New York city, according to a Twitter post shared April 21, the first since a judge ordered her release from a Virginia jail in March following a reported suicide attempt.
In the social media post, the whistleblower and campaigner is seen wearing a facemask, and writes: “doing what i can to help collect & distribute PPE to some of those most in need.”
Like pretty much everyone else, she has also “been staying safe inside a lot” during the coronavirus pandemic.
“Thankful for all your wonderful love and support!” she adds. “We will get through this together.”
Manning has previously thanked her supporters after being freed from a stint in prison back in 2019. “An incredible spring of solidarity and love has boiled over,” she wrote at the time, in response to messages of gratitude and encouragement from friends and allies.
Manning’s release in March 2020 came despite her ongoing refusal to testify to a grand jury investigating WikiLeaks. Critics of grand juries claim that they are “open to dishonesty due their inherent secrecy” and often lead to unjust indictments.
