Greta Thunberg meets Malala Yousafzai for the first time

‘She’s the only friend I’d skip school for,’ Malala says

Youth activists are leading the charge in many of the most important protest movements and conversations in the world today, and very few figures sum this up better than Greta Thunberg and Malala Yousafzai.

Today (February 25) the 17 year old climate activist and the 22 year old female education activist met for the first time at Oxford University, where the latter is studying.

“So... today I met my role model,” Thunberg writes alongside a picture of the pair posted to social media. “What else can I say?”

“She’s the only friend I’d skip school for,” Yousafzai adds in a similar post.

Beyond that, it’s not 100% clear what they talked about during their meeting (although it’s probably safe to say it wasn’t just a chat about the Nobel Peace Prize win and nominations they have between them).

Thunberg did also address some other students at the university though, talking about “science, voting, the limits of protest, divestment, real zero v net zero, and much more,” according to Alan Rusbridger, the master of Yousafzai’s Oxford college.

Thunberg is currently in the UK with plans to join a school strike in Bristol February 28. She’s also reportedly working on a documentary series with the BBC, and has recently announced that she’s establishing a foundation with the prize money from a Right Livelihood Award.
