Grimes shares a new song, ‘Love’, in response to ‘hate and harassment’

The track deals with ‘privacy invasion, bad press, and online hate’ sparked by her separation from Elon Musk

Grimes has dropped a brand new song, titled “Love”. Sharing the surprise track alongside ethereal visuals on Instagram, the musician says that it was created just this week, as a reaction to the attention that followed the announcement that she’s “semi-separated” from Elon Musk.

“I wrote and produced this song this week in response to all the privacy invasion, bad press, online hate and harassment by paparazzis I’ve experienced this week,” she writes in the caption to the “Love” video.

The song itself includes the lyrics: “It fucking sucks to be awake / Oh Lord I pray my soul to take / Nobody understands because / Everything they hate / Is everything I love.

Elon Musk announced the couple’s separation last week (September 24), telling Page Six: “We are semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently and are on great terms.”

Some of Grimes’ fans — who she previously called out for “harassing” her over her relationship with the SpaceX founder — seemingly welcomed the news on social media. Azealia Banks also openly celebrated the announcement, writing: “Ok girl, can we finally make those darn songs now that apartheid Clyde is out of the way?”

Grimes herself has spoken about the split in more lighthearted terms, saying that her post breakup plans include “colonising Europa (one of Jupiter’s moons) separately from Elon for the lesbian space commune”.

“Love” is Grimes’ first full release since her AI-driven lullaby for Endel, though she has also teased new music from her upcoming “lesbian AI space opera” album in recent months, including the track “Shinigami Eyes”.
