Lil Nas X’s latest single, “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”, has been topping charts, winning over famous fans, and pissing off all the right people since it was released on March 26. Now, though, its days on major streaming services might be numbered, the rapper says, responding to reports that the song won’t play online.
“It’s happening on all the streaming services,” he said in a recent tweet. “Everybody stream ‘Call Me By Your Name’ hard today because it may no longer be available tomorrow and there’s nothing I can really do about it.”
The tweet’s replies are flooded with fans posting proof that they can’t listen online, including screenshots of a message saying that the track is no longer available. “I was about to laugh at you guys for not being able to listen but I can’t anymore either!!” wrote one Twitter user. “I literally just listened to it on the way home last night like 20 times.”
Currently, there’s no public explanation for the song’s disappearance, but Lil Nas X does have some solutions for those missing out. For starters, he suggests that everybody screen records the audio and video on YouTube, “so you will have the song in your gallery worst case scenario”.
Those who missed that chance may soon be able to pop over to Pornhub to stream the track. In another tweet, Lil Nas X said: “Since ‘Call Me By Your Name’ is no longer working on many streaming services I will be uploading the audio to Pornhub at 3pm EST.”
The porn site has previously provided a home for banned UK drill videos – alongside a leaked Margiela documentary and an official release of Leila Weinraub’s Shakedown – so the idea doesn’t sound too far-fetched. “We aim to please,” read a reply from the official Pornhub Twitter account. “Honored to help you stream.”
Last week, Lil Nas X dropped a remixed version of “Montero (Call Me By Your Name”, taking inspiration from YouTube’s famous “24/7 lo-fi hip hop beats” streams. The new iteration of the track also follows the release of a “Montero”-themed video game, which allows players to twerk their way down to the pits of hell. Again, a Pornhub stream doesn’t feel particularly out of place.
