The new video for Lil Nas X’s ‘Rodeo’ references ‘Thriller’ and The Matrix

The release also sees the rapper team up with Nas, fresh from their performance at the Grammys

“Rodeo”, a track off Lil Nas X’s debut EP 7, originally featured a verse from Cardi B, but for his performance at the Grammys last month he was joined by Nas instead, along with a few other familiar faces.

As of today (February 6) the Lil Nas X and Nas version (no relation, btw) has a video as well. The new visuals see the “Old Town Road” rapper morphing through several monstrous guises, with nods to a variety of horror and sci-fi classics along the way.

As teased yesterday on social media, these references include Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video, Buffy, and The Matrix. (Think: Lil Nas X becoming a vampire and dodging bullets in tiny sunglasses. Iconic.)

Nas also appears looking like Morpheus from The Matrix, offering a choice between a red pill and a blue pill; Lil Nas takes the red pill, obviously. Cardi B, unfortunately, wasn’t able to make it.

The new video isn’t the only good news for Lil Nas X fans. “Now that Rodeo is out,” he writes in another tweet, “new music season is OTW!”
