Rihanna, Beyoncé, Meek Mill and more campaign for a death row inmate

Among others, the musicians have signed a petition aimed at preventing the execution of Rodney Reed

On November 20, 2019, the State of Texas is due to execute Rodney Reed, a man convicted of a 1996 murder in Bastrop, Texas. However, with evidence suggesting his innocence stacking up, a petition is urging the governor of the state to reconsider, and it’s attracted the attention of some big names.

Beyoncé, Rihanna, Pusha-T, and others have voiced their support for rescinding the death warrant and opening a new trial for Reed, who has been on death row for two decades.

The front page of Beyoncé’s website reads: “Dear Gov. Greg Abbott, Please take a hard look at the evidence in the Rodney Reed case that points to his innocence.”

“Be honest. Be fair. Give him back his life.”

Meek Mill has also spoken out about the case, having vowed to fight for justice reform after being released from prison.

Currently, the signatures on the petition – which outlines the available evidence against Reed’s guilty verdict – sit at over 435,000, just under the 500,000 goal.
