Appearing on T.I.’s podcast, expediTIously With Tip, alongside Chance the Rapper, Cardi expressed concern that no 2020 candidate had emerged as a clear frontrunner, and that Trump’s base was too established to be defeated. “I think Trump is going to win again at the next election because he’s got the biggest base,” Chance said, prompting Cardi to respond: “I really hate to say it, but sometimes I do believe that Trump will be winning. Just because every single time I don’t see nobody saying they love a Democratic candidate. There’s no candidate that people are saying like we love, we want them to win.” Cardi is a vocal supporter of Bernie Sanders, recently appearing alongside the senator as part of an ongoing effort to encourage young people to vote. On the podcast, she described him as “really a person that cares”. Cardi is right to be concerned over the lack of enthusiasm for most of the Democratic candidates – unlike other Republicans, Trump benefits from a fired-up base who will campaign on his behalf, and it will take a similar push from Democratic supporters to beat him. However, there is one candidate with a huge, engaged base of support – one who’s leading a genuine working class movement, and who polls often suggest could beat Trump in a general election – and that’s Bernie Sanders.
