The singer performed her rendition of the 90s ska punk band’s ‘Doin’ Time’ for the first time ever at Dublin’s Malahide Castle
“Not a day goes by that I don’t listen to at least one Sublime song”, Del Rey said at the time. “They epitomised the SoCal vibe and made a genre and sound totally their own.”
In a fan video from Saturday’s concert at Ireland’s Malahide Castle, Del Rey performs her dreamy rendition of the track against a digital backdrop of an orange sunset.
Though the cover received some backlash at the time – Del Rey stans demanded a new album, while Sublime fans weren’t too pleased with the singer’s laidback version – the Irish crowd can be heard enthusiastically singing along to every word.
Taking place over the summer solstice weekend, Del Rey celebrated her 34th birthday the day before her performance, telling fans: “I’m so happy to be here on my birthday.” Also indulging the primarily Irish crowd, the singer expressed her love of “storytelling in Irish songs”.
“Doin Time” is taken from the soundtrack of a new documentary about Sublime, which premiered in April at Tribeca. Directed by Bill Guttentag, the film charts the band’s “meteoric rise, tragic end, and lasting legacy”, and (along with Del Rey’s stamp of approval) will undoubtedly see the group acquire a new wave of admiring fans.
There’s no further news on the official release date of Del Rey’s upcoming sixth album, Norman Fucking Rockwell, though the musician confirmed it was finished at the end of last year. Having already released three of its tracks – “Mariners Apartment Complex”, “Venice Bitch”, and “hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have – but i have it” – fans are eagerly (and impatiently) awaiting the record, which apparently features a lot of electric guitar.
Last week (June 16), Del Rey teased a snippet of the album’s title track on her Instagram, produced by Jack Antonoff. In a previous Beats 1 interview with Zane Lowe, the singer said of the song: “It’s kind of about this guy who is such a genius artist but he thinks he’s the shit and he knows it and he like won’t shut up talking about it.” Sounds like every boy on Tinder TBH.
