Lana Del Rey is back once more, with a typically dreamy Cali ballad in the form of “Mariners Apartment Complex”. This time she has the help of pop megahit producer Jack Antonoff, with what is reportedly the first track from her upcoming 2019 studio album.
The song premiered on Annie Mac’s Radio 1 show yesterday afternoon, where Del Rey hopped on to discuss it. She said that the song’s about the disconnect between perception and reality in relationships, an “end of summer jam”. It’s airy and stripped back, recalling the faded, reverby days of her Ultraviolence record. The singer also added that she’s working on a book of poetry that she intends to self-publish.
Antonoff has produced both new tracks – he’s well known for his work on Lorde’s Melodrama, as well as Carly Rae Jepsen and Tegan & Sara records, and makes his own music as Bleachers.
The former Dazed cover star described her sixth studio album as more “surfy”, experimenting with more electric guitar. She will drop another track, titled “Venice Bitch”, on September 18. A video will premier for the new track too, directed by her sister and the artist Chuck.
Since last year’s excellent album Lust for Life, the musician has shared an old demo that’s been used for a new documentary on Elvis Presley, and teamed up with Cat Power for the song “Woman”.
Del Rey met with controversy just last month, when she was criticised by Palestinian activists and boycott supporters for appearing on the line-up for the Israeli music festival Meteor. She has since backed out of the festival.
