The ode to being rich, which is making us all feel more poor by comparison, was streamed 16.9 million times, also taking it to number 1 in the charts. The track takes the crown from Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You”, which could only manage 15.3 million streams, even when it was most in demand, in December 2018. Seeing as it’s broken this record, it’s pretty likely that you already recognise the extravagant wealth and pink-drenched visuals of the accompanying video to “7 Rings”. This did lead to some trouble though, as it prompted complaints that Ariana’s aesthetic was too close to that of 2 Chainz’s pink trap house, adding to allegations of copying from Princess Nokia and Soulja Boy. Still, it’s unlikely that she’ll let the accusations get her down when she’s hitting figures like this. (And she’s very rich, remember.) Escape the algorithm!
