The fourth installment of the Instagram-only platform was shot in New York City by photographer Orograph and sees FKA twigs wearing Stephen Jones, Donatella Versace, Nasir Mazhar and John Galliano for Dior. She is featured alongside Hannah and Raj of arts collective Fecal Matter (“friends of AVANTgarden”, according to a press release) and A$AP Rocky (her “favourite sleep angel”). “Welcome to AVANTgarden. Fresh out of a government testing facility, alien princess FKA twigs takes New York City by storm,” the zine’s cover line reads. “Let’s join her shall we?” Each issue of AVANTgarden sees FKA twigs collaborate with figures from the worlds of music, art, photography, fashion, and beyond. The zine was recognised at the 22nd Annual Webby Awards, where twigs was honoured with a Special Achievement Award for her “incredible contributions to digital culture and for constantly using the internet to create and distribute experimental new art”. The first issue of AVANTgarden launched in October 2017 and was a visual exploration of braided hairstyles, while issue two, titled “Dream Warrior”, featured an original poem from FKA twigs herself. This was followed by “MEATSPACE”, created in collaboration with experimental electronic musician Oneohtrix Point Never, picturing a dystopian world where AI have slaughtered most of the human race, sparing only the artists in the pursuit of fully understanding and exploiting humanity.
