The track dates back to the early 2010s, and it shows: its title references the once-ubiquitous Blackberry Messenger, and its jaunty sound is a far cry from the cinematic, noirish avenues that Del Rey has since pursued. In its lyrics, she sings about sexting a lover using the all-but-obsolete technology: “I be BBMing you, telling you / All the things I’m gonna do to you / When you get home baby.” The song was co-written by Penguin Prison, who as Popcrush point out once talked about it in an interview with Filter at the tail end of 2011. “She came over and we worked on a song a while ago,” Penguin Prison said, “It was called ‘BBM Baby’, I guess it was about her Blackberry Messenger... I met her like two years ago and hung out with her a bunch in London and New York. She’s funny, she’s a very entertaining person to hang out with, and she has a wonderful singing voice.” Even though it’s jarringly upbeat, there’s no denying that “BBM Baby” is also an extremely fun song.
