Music / States of IndependenceWatch Mykki Blanco and Gobby's nu-weird home recordingsFrom North Carolina to Guatemala, the alt-heroes of the NYC music scene share videos from the outliers of their great continentShareLink copied ✔️August 15, 2014MusicStates of IndependenceTextUNO As part of our new summer US project States of Independence we've invited our favourite 30 American curators, magazines, creatives and institutions to takeover Dazed for a day. Uno – the convention-blasting, genre-straddling, Brooklyn-based electronic dance music label – are taking over Dazed for the day. They welcome us to their world with a curated selection of their favourite artists of the moment, including exclusive treats from Mykki Blanco, Gobby and Ian Isiah. Mykki Blanco is the compellingly sharp rapper whose drag persona and poetic conscience have redefined the NY rap scene. Gobby is the mysterious Harlem production wizard whose electronic jams are always off-kilter and always on-the-money. Both are on the UNO label, of course, but that's where any concept of "labelling" ends. In the spirit of the genre-blasting style of Uno, the friends have often collaborated and worked together (Gobby notably producing a couple of tracks on Mykki's 2012 mixtape, Cosmic Angel: The Illuminati Prince/ss). Lately, they've both been recording off-the-cuff videos as well as music; when they shared said video recordings with Dazed, we decided to showcase them together. From Gobby's travels to Central America to Mykki Blanco's childhood flashbacks in the North Carolina backwoods, these excerpts from the pair's latest projects take on an America's Home Videos aesthetic and turn the lens to their continent's farthest cultural outreaches. MYKKI BLANCO – "GAY DOG FOOD" Gay Dog Food is Mykki Blanco's musical alias and ongoing project: a sonic mixture of poetry, spoken word monologue, femme positive sound features, industrial grunge soundscapes and hip hop tinged punk tracks. As Mykki told us, "It's a record for alternative slumber parties." Below is his "Pledge To Be Kind" – his take on the pledge young American school children are told to say after the pledge of allegiance, presented as a flashback to baby Mykki. Bless. Watch out for more from the conceptual project, later this year. GOBBY – "SNITCHY BALUGA" This video, filmed by Gobby, is a visual accompaniment to "Snitchy Beluga" – UNO's favourite record from the Wakng Thrst for Seeping Banhee LP, the 21 track experimental album released by Gobby earlier this year. Filmed in Jutiapa, Guatemala, in and around a mechanic's house, it conveys a visual representation of Gobby's background from the perspective of a Central American: the lifestyle to match the wonky music and melting pot beats of his music.
