Music / First LookMaya Jane Coles – ComfortExclusive: An alien birth in the epic new video from the London house innovatorShareLink copied ✔️March 13, 2014MusicFirst LookTextJazz Monroe Previous videos by hot-handed UK producer Maya Jane Coles depict freaky taxidermy and ritual exenteration, but “Comfort” takes us somewhere more subtly skin-crawling. Director Jonas Lord, assistant director of squirmy MJC videos “Burning Bright” and “Everything”, uses skin casings, slow-rolling cameras and symbolic skies to “explore metamorphosis through various forms of being”. As the song (taken from 2013’s Comfort LP, rereleased March 24) beams narcotic deep house vibes through layers of trip-hop smoke, the camera orbits a milky, disintegrating woman, who emerges veiny and curious from a crusty cocoon before undergoing cosmic leakage. Her gap-toothed grin is so eerily sensual it’ll turn fuzzy dreams into wet nightmares.
