We speak to those behind the London-based electronic label alongside an exclusive mix featuring their signings as they hit their first year anniversary
Having just released the stunning new collaborative EP from South London's My Panda Shall Fly and Benjamin Jackson, experimental electronic record label and party-throwers, Five Easy Pieces, hit their first anniversary this March. The label have come a long way in a year, having started out releasing their first signings Royalty, to Call Super since.
We're throwing a free party at The Shacklewell Arms on Saturday. Everyone that is on our latest EP is playing - including My Panda Shall Fly, patten, Cloud Boat, Chairman Kato and Benjamin Jackson
Their new arrival comes with an all-star remix package from patten, Charman Kato and R&S' Cloud Boat, who will also be playing their launch party tomorrow night at Shacklewell Arms to celebrate. For a taste of what's to come, check out their exclusive new mix for Dazed Digital by one half of the label Claudio Lillo, available for download HERE.
Dazed Digital: Happy birthday! How does it feel to hit your first year anniversary & how will you be celebrating?
Claudio Lillo: Thanks, it feels prettay, prettayyy prettaaay good. We're throwing a free party at The Shacklewell Arms on Saturday. Everyone that is on our latest EP is playing, the lineup includes My Panda Shall Fly, patten, Cloud Boat, Chairman Kato and Benjamin Jackson. Tom, my label partner, is at SXSW so I'll be celebrating for the two of us.
DD: How do you find and/or pick your artists? Is there something in common that runs through all your signings or a sound you’re looking for?
Claudio Lillo: Mostly by having talented friends, the rest is luck. There isn't really a common thread to our signings, apart from Tom and I really liking the music.
DD: What was the story behind the name?
Claudio Lillo: We took it from the Rafelson film starring a dreamy Jack Nicholson.
DD: What has been the biggest struggle you've faced in starting a label?
Claudio Lillo: For a while we were worried that we wouldn't find anybody we liked as much as our first signing, Royalty. Once we signed a few more people the only difficult has been making sure each release gets to as many people is possible.
DD: What are you listening in your own time now?
Claudio Lillo: Gerry Read, John Talabot, Zomby, New Look, Grimes, Aaliyah and Slum Village. Also my mates run great labels and they always hook me up with stuff. Out to Man Make Music, somethinksounds and Orca!
DD: What's next?
Claudio Lillo: We're putting out a white label by a new producer called Citizen in May. Royalty are almost done with their next EP and Midnight Davis is also pretty much done with his. Call Super has some special stuff up his sleeve too. We're switching up the sleeve art for the next five releases, so that will be fun. Also, we're setting up label parties in a few European cities over the next year.
