Last night, Elon Musk controversially hosted Saturday Night Live, despite widespread objections, including public skepticism from several cast members. Appearing alongside musical guest Miley Cyrus, the billionaire SpaceX founder was also joined by his partner Grimes, in a courtroom sketch based on the Mario franchise.
“Tune into SNL tonight to watch me try acting!” the musician wrote in a teaser posted to Instagram ahead of the show.
Specifically, Grimes plays the Princess Peach to Musk’s Wario in the SNL skit, accused of cheating on Mario with his brother, Luigi. If, for some reason, you ever wanted to witness the Miss Anthropocene musician’s over-the-top Italian accent, then you’re in luck.
Elsewhere, in his introductory monologue, the self-proclaimed “Technoking of Tesla” makes jokes about the name of their child, X Æ A-Xii — “It’s pronounced: cat running across the keyboard” — and discusses topics ranging from his otherworldly ambitions, to that time he tentatively tried smoking weed on Joe Rogan’s podcast.
Of course, he also found time to plug Dogecoin, having celebrated the meme currency for some time (apparently, the price immediately plummeted).
“I believe that humanity must become a multi-planetary, space-faring civilisation,” he says at one point in the monologue. “Those seem like exciting goals, don’t they? If I just posted that on Twitter, I’d be fine.” Presumably, that’s as long as he stayed away from proclaiming that “a bunch of people will probably die”.
Continuing on the theme of his almost-constant Twitter controversy, he adds: “To anyone I’ve offended, I just want to say I reinvented electric cars and I’m sending people to Mars in a rocket ship. Did you think I was also gonna be a chill normal dude?”
