The mural by artist Knapple and trans activist Sharpay Salazar appeared on an underpass in Bimini’s hometown of Norwich last week. It featured a trans flag and a painting of Bimini – who is non-binary – wearing their Norwich City FC look from the first episode. It read: “Bimini Babes watch the queen conquer. Whether you’re he, she or them!!! #TransRights.” According to BBC News, the artwork was painted over yesterday (March 28) in an apparent act of vandalism. Responding to the news on Twitter, Bimini said: “I’ll never shy away from living an authentically queer experience even if there are people that disagree with our existence,” they wrote. “Trans rights are human rights and I will push that message until the end.” They added: “I don’t feel anger, I have sympathy. I feel sorry for the people who felt threatened or intimidated by a message portraying love, positivity and kindness.” In more positive news, the queen announced last week that they will be releasing a book titled, A Drag Queen’s Guide to Life, in October. The book will see Bimini explore what life in drag has taught them about identity, politics, history, health, and fashion. As well as discussing their own story, they will also explore the non-conformist queens, musicians, and designers who have inspired them. “This book is an absolute ‘don’t wake me if I’m dreaming’ moment, and I can’t wait to share it with the world,” Bimini said in a press release. “Think of this as your anti self-help book – a manifesto that won’t make you feel bad when you don’t do things perfectly, and will encourage you to be kind to yourself always.” Following their model debut with Art School earlier this year, Bimini also announced that they have been signed onto Next model management. “Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever thought this possible. This opportunity is a huge crazy, mind-blowing moment for my gender-non comforting a*s and to top it all off they have signed me to the managements main booking list rather than special bookings...which makes me gag!“ they wrote on Instagram. “This is huge for non-binary representation in fashion and I’m so thankful that Next want to take this chance with me!!” Watch Bimini talk us through their biggest fashion inspirations and 00s pop-culture in their Dazed Cult Vault – enjoy!
