Jennifer Lawrence just became the latest victim to have their awful ordeal result in prison time for the hackers. 26-year-old George Garofano was sentenced to eight months in jail on Wednesday for hacking the private Apple iCloud accounts of almost 250 people ranging from Hollywood stars to normal internet users. The prosecution wrote a sentencing memo for the court that outlined the “utter disregard” demonstrated by his disturbing 18 month scheme. “Not only did Mr Garofano keep for himself the photographs he stole, he disseminated them to other individuals. He may have also sold them to others to earn ‘extra income’,” it read. Those targeted allegedly included Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna and Cara Delevingne. “It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime,” Lawrence told Vanity Fair, several months after the news first hit. “It is a sexual violation. It's disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change.” In April, Garofano pleaded guilty, admitting that he sent phishing emails to the victims pretending to be Apple’s online security personnel in order to obtain their usernames and passwords. However, he’s claiming to have matured since he orchestrated the scheme during his college years. “He now stands before the court having matured, accepting responsibility for his actions and having not been in trouble with the law since,” defense attorney Richard Lynch wrote. “There is nothing to suggest that he would ever engage in this or any other criminal conduct in the future.” Despite the emotional trauma of the victims, and the fact the pictures will live online forever, the other three hackers connected to the crime have only been sentenced to between nine and 18 months in prison.
