On Thursday night, Kanye West popped up on American TV, making his first major, public interview appearance since what felt like a never-ending wave of controversies that have swept through the year. 

Since his TMZ incident, rant avalanches on Twitter, and pictured images of the rapper donning a MAGA hat while meeting Republican representatives, the Ye artist and Yeezy designer has been laying low. This is his first appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! since 2013, and the rapper sat down to discuss his mental health, music, Pornhub, and of course, Donald Trump.

”Everyone around me tried to pick my candidate for me, and then told me every time I said I liked Trump that I couldn’t say it out loud, or my career would be over, or I’d get kicked out of the black community,” he told the host. 

While West vaguely tries to justify his backing of the U.S president and does make some interesting points about mental health, he doesn’t really say anything new. In fact, he reverts back to old ways by getting caught up in his own words, going off on tangents and once again, avoiding and diverging from simple questions. Here’s some of the more interesting moments.

KANYE ON MENTAL HEALTH IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY

When discussing mental health and opening up about his bipolar disorder, Kanye notes that conversation needs to be more honest and open, particularly among his black peers.

”It’s not that I hate being bipolar. It’s awesome,” West said. ”It actually drives more of how you really feel. It doesn’t do the opposite thing. I think it’s important for us to have open conversations about mental health. Especially with me being black. Because we never had therapists in the black community.”

“We never approached taking medication. I think it is good that when I had my first complete black out at age five, my mum didn’t fully medicate me, I might not have fully been Ye.”

Well into the interview, Jimmy refers back to the famous West quote from 2005, when the rapper said on live TV that then-president George W. Bush ”doesn’t care about black people”. He spoke out during A Concert for Hurricane Relief, a benefit following Hurricane Katrina.

Stumped, silent and looking a bit lost, West contemplates the question for three seconds before Kimmel swiftly suggests taking a break.

In May, Kim Kardashian went to Washington to meet with President Trump, successfully convincing him to grant clemency to drug offender Alice Marie Johnson, who served over 20 years in prison. When asked about this, West mentioned that she was super passionate about it and that it was amazing to see that dream come true.

Following the discussion about Kim’s visit to Washington, Jimmy asks West, ”Were you ever concerned about her being alone in the Oval Office with Trump?”. To which Kanye responded: ”well, he is a player”.

”It represented overcoming fear and doing what you felt no matter what anyone said, and saying, ‘You can’t bully me’. Liberals can’t bully me, news can’t bully me, the hip-hop community, they can’t bully me. Because at that point, if I’m afraid to be me, I’m no longer Ye. That’s what makes Ye.”

Kanye has previously flaunted a signed ‘Make America Great Again’ – a move that saw Trump try to harness and hawk more of the merch – and posed with Republican representatives.

West also touched upon his previously filmed interview with TMZ, in which he asserted that slavery was ‘a choice’, which rightfully sparked furious criticism. He put this down to his struggle with bipolar. ”What was awesome (about the TMZ interview) is the world got to really experience someone in a ramped-up state. And that’s when you get these comments that just shoot out, almost like Tourette’s,” West said.

Jimmy Kimmel asked Ye if his attitudes towards women had changed drastically since having his daughter, North West.

“No, I still look at Pornhub," West answered. “Blacked is my favorite category.”

“You don’t have to go into that,” Jimmy replied, giving him an easy out.

“What’s the point in being Kanye West if you can’t? Let’s break down the categories...” he laughed. “A lot of black on white, obviously… My own reality.”
