Dazed x MUBI Cinema Club is back with a with an all-female directed programme, serving up programme, serving up unique cinematic experiences from now until the end of the year as part of our autumn 2024 series. There’s screenings of Luna Carmoon’s Hoard, Mati Diop’s Dahomey, and Andrea Arnold’s Bird starring Barry Keoghan to look forward to. First up, though, a preview of The Substance, the horrifying new satire from French director Coralie Fargeat. Starring Margaret Qualley, Demi Moore, and Dennis Quaid, The Substance follows Elisabeth Sparkle (played by Moore), a former A-lister who is shocked to be fired from her show on her 50th birthday. As a result, she’s drawn to a mysterious new drug called The Substance, which promises a better, more perfect version of herself. What could go wrong? Causing a stir at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the Revenge director’s latest film provocatively pokes at toxic beauty culture, with a be-careful-what-you-wish-for message that won’t soon be forgotten.. Dazed x MUBI Cinema Club will host an exclusive preview of The Substance at London’s Rio Cinema on September 18, ahead of the film’s nationwide release on September 20.
