According to a public casting call, no previous acting experience is necessary to play the new trans characters, Abbi and Kent. Joining the existing cast for their final year at Moordale, the pair are billed as “the ultimate power couple”. Though details about their story are being kept under wraps — along with the rest of the season four story — the description goes on: “They’ve been together for a while and are the definition of ‘couple goals’, everyone loves them.” The open casting call is shared by one of the show’s writers, Krishna Istha, and goes into more detail about the individual characters. Abbi, it says, is: “a young trans woman with a 90s Winona Ryder vibe, who is confident and self-assured in her gender identity.” She’s also the “queen bee” of her college, but was kicked out of the house by her religious, conservative parents when she came out as a trans woman, and now lives with Kent’s more accepting family. Kent, meanwhile, is a trans-masculine character described a “goofy, forgetful, and a great listener”. Though he’s less inclined to be one of the popular kids than Abbi, “he knows himself and feels quietly confident about his final year at college”. The release date of Sex Education season four is yet to be revealed, but the actors who get the new parts will have to be available to shoot in Wales from April to November 2022, suggesting that it won’t arrive until 2023. As Istha explains in a follow-up post, the roles are open to non-UK residents and actors of any ethnicity: “There’s no race description because anyone can apply!” Find the open casting call below.
