5 things Timothée Chalamet and Larry David talked about at lunch

In the most bizarre yet brilliant friendship in history, the pair were spotted sipping espresso martinis in New York

Yesterday (September 15), someone’s answer to the question, ‘If you could have dinner with any person dead or alive, who would it be?’, came true, as Timothée Chalamet and Larry David were spotted lunching together in New York.

The pair were papped sipping espresso martinis and sharing animated stories, as they dined al fresco in NYC. As the photos emerged on the TL, questions began to arise about how the hell these two very different characters found themselves in an intimate lunch setting.

The answer may lie in the table’s other guests: David’s daughter, Romy and her boyfriend Josiah Adams. TBC if Chalamet knows Romy, and thereby gets to hang out with her dad, or if Chalamet loves the Curb Your Enthusiasm creator, and was kindly invited to tag along to a family meal.

Anyway, who cares about the background; what we want to know is WTF did they talk about? Below, we speculate.

NYFW will definitely have been on the conversation agenda, given both Chalamet and David were in attendance. While Chalamet made an unremarkable appearance at L’Officiel USA’s launch celebration – alongside his Call My By Your Name co-star Armie Hammer – David made headline news. Why? For absolutely hating every minute of it. The comedian was filmed plugging his ears and resting his head in his hands during STAUD’s presentation – just days after he was captured doing the same thing at the US Open.

It’s likely David complained to Chalamet about the volume of the show, his indignation at receiving an invitation – and therefore having to go thanks to arbitrary social conventions – as well as about the fuss that was made afterwards. “I don’t really get this fascination people have with me,” David would say, and Chalamet would respond with a sincere, heartwarming compliment. Cute!

Larry David famously loves being bald. Timothée Chalamet famously has luscious locks. This would fill hours of lunchtime chat. Although David prefers other bald people, he would talk to Chalamet about his (probably extensive) haircare routine with a genuine interest, while Chalamet would take an emotional approach, asking David how losing his hair at a young age made him feel. This would likely be the topic that bonds the pair the most.

Deciding who pays for lunch is a running joke throughout Curb Your Enthusiasm. David gets into a physical fight with Rosie O’Donnell because they both want to pay the bill; he’s offended when Jason Alexander leaves a bigger tip than him at a restaurant; David tells Richard Lewis, “Fuck you, I’m paying”, before they both race to get their credit card to the restaurant first. One of the best money scenes is in season three, when David offends Susan, his friend Stu’s wife, when he refuses to thank her when Stu pays for dinner. “He’s the one who goes to work and earns the money, you don’t work,” he tells her.

Something similar would unfold during David’s lunch with Chalamet. Both very rich and famous men, each of them would insist on paying the bill. David would say he knows more people at the table, so it’s his obligation to pay, while Chalamet simply wants the gratitude of his idol Larry David. Maybe they scream at each other, maybe they physically fight, or maybe they amicably split the bill.

It could be that this is a stop and chat gone wrong. David bumped into Chalamet while having lunch with his daughter and her boyfriend; Chalamet wanted to engage him in conversation; David felt pressured by societal norms to invite him to join them; and voila, the rest is history.

Could it actually be that Chalamet is starring in the forthcoming new season of Curb and the pair were out secretly filming the episode? This theory would make sense, given David’s recent antics at the US Open and Fashion Week. Could Chalamet’s lunch be another plot in the show, or even another teaser for the new series? Here’s hoping!
