A brand new Sailor Moon film is set to premiere on Netflix

Fighting evil by moonlight, winning love by daylight, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal will hit screens in June

The latest film from the Sailor Moon franchise, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Eternal, will premiere globally on Netflix for the first time outside of Japan.

Arriving on June 3, the two-part film, which already premiered back in January and February in Japan, centres on the ‘Dream’ arc of creator Naoko Takeuchi’s original manga series. Directed by Chiaki Kon (also behind Netflix’s new anime series The Way Of The Househusband), the film will primarily focus on the Sailor Guardians, as well as the relationship between Chibi-Usa and Helios.

Netflix dropped a teaser for the film on Twitter yesterday (April 27), with the caption: “Join all your favorite Sailor Guardians as they battle the mysterious Dead Moon Circus and awaken dazzling new powers.”

“The upcoming adventures are set in April, when the cherry blossoms are in bloom and Tokyo is in a festive mood as it celebrates the largest Total Solar Eclipse of the century,” reads a longer synopsis.

“As the new moon obscures the sun and gradually dims its light, Usagi and Chibi-Usa encounter Pegasus, who is in search of the chosen Maiden who can break the seal of the Golden Crystal. Meanwhile, a mysterious troupe called the Dead Moon Circus appears in town who’s nefarious plan is to scatter the nightmare incarnations known as Lemures, seize the ‘Legendary Silver Crystal,’ rule over the moon and the earth, and eventually dominate the entire universe,” it continues.

Ever since the first season of the anime aired in 1993, Naoko Takeuchi’s epic story about a group of interplanetary superheroines (and school girls), who fight against villainous queens and ‘death busters’ to protect the spacetime continuum, has sparked countless spin-offs, films, and even a make-up collection.

Across its five seasons, there’s been over 40 Japanese albums released for the anime – here’s five of our favourites.
