Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge will star in Mr & Mrs Smith reboot

The Amazon Studios adaptation of the 2005 film is set to premiere in 2022

Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are set to take the titular roles in an upcoming reboot of Mr & Mrs Smith. Led by Amazon Studios and New Regency – the company behind the original, 2005 film starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt – the new series will also see the two stars executive produce.

The news comes courtesy of Glover and Waller-Bridge, who posted the announcement in separate Instagram stories, subsequently shared by Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke, who also credits Fargo’s Francesca Sloan as a co-creator.

“Talk about the dream team!” says Salke in a statement, reported by Variety. “Donald and Phoebe are two of the most talented creators and performers in the world. It’s truly a dream for us, as it will be for our global audience, to have these two forces of nature collaborating as a powerhouse creative team.”

The 2005 action comedy saw Jolie and Pitt star as a married couple living in suburbia, who discover that they’re both secretly assassins working for competing agencies. “We can’t wait to see how Donald, Phoebe, and Francesca make it their own,” adds Salke.

Glover and Waller-Bridge have previously collaborated in the Star Wars film Solo, and have separately produced projects for Amazon. The former’s Rihanna-starring film Guava Island premiered via Amazon in April 2019, while Waller-Bridge’s cult sitcom Fleabag was co-produced by the company.

Last year, Donald Glover released his latest musical project as Childish Gambino. The eclectic album, 3.15.20, features appearances from Ariana Grande, 21 Savage, and more.

2020 also saw Waller-Bridge confirm that Fleabag will never return. The actor and writer has recently appeared in music videos including Harry Styles’ “Treat People With Kindness” and Phoebe Bridgers’ “Savior Complex”.

Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s adaptation of Mr & Mrs Smith is slated to premiere in 2022.
