Created by toy company McFarlane Toys, some of the film’s main characters have been immortalised in plastic, including Paul Atreides (Chalamet), Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa), Stilgar (Javier Bardem), and Glossu Rabban (Dave Bautista). One character notably missing, though, is Chani, played by Euphoria’s Zendaya. This is likely because Villeneuve’s adaptation splits the book into two films, meaning Chani won’t feature so heavily in the first instalment. In August, the actor discussed her limited screen time: “Dune was incredible. I wasn’t in it very much. It is a big deal to even be a small part of something with such a massive cast. And I love sci-fi stuff too. It’s fun to escape into another world.” Via McFarlane Toys Villeneuve’s Dune was originally slated for release this month, but was postponed to 2021 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. On its release, it will debut on HBO Max on the same day as premiering in cinemas – a decision which has been met with anger by cinema owners. Dune is a 1965 sci-fi novel by Frank Herbet, and tells the story of Paul Atreides, a young nobleman in a feudal society set in a faraway future, where families face off over a powerful ‘spice’ – a drug that can extend human life and provide superhuman levels of thought. The book has launched a number of disastrous film attempts, most notably David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation, which the director has described as “a failure”.
