Made tastefully in collaboration with Brooklyn-based fragrance studio Joya, the collection features eight candles, each based on a different film genre: horror, western, thriller, noir, adventure, sci-fi, and rom-com. According to the A24 website, the burn time for each candle is between 50 and 60 hours, or approximately 33 movies. The horror candle is inspired by remote lakeside cabins, foreboding shadows, and low-angle staircase shots, giving off a “dank, leathery” scent, while noir’s honey, lemon, and concrete notes take cues from face-obscuring hats, tape recorders, typewriters, and the lingering scent of a woman. A personal highlight is the sci-fi candle, inspired by falling into the infinite void and the receding echo of a scream – relatable. There’s also the rom-com candle, a wild strawberry and cardamom number that evokes breakfast in bed, love triangles, and walking through Central Park on a brisk day. Sarah Jessica Parker could never. A24 is the stellar indie film company that’s produced some of the best movies across genres in recent times, from Midsommar and Hereditary to Uncut Gems, Mid90s, and The Lighthouse. Forthcoming is Saint Maud, a dark psychological horror about a live-in nurse who has recently found god. The candles are available on the A24 site and will be restocking very soon.
