Awards season is in full swing, and Britain’s biggest night in film has finally arrived. Over at Southbank’s Royal Festival Hall, the 79th BAFTAs are currently taking place, hosted by Alan Cumming and welcoming some of Hollywood’s brightest and buzziest stars – from Leonardo DiCaprio to Paddington Bear.

The BAFTAs always manage to feel like a surreal crossover episode. Last year, we watched as David Tennant serenaded Kylie Jenner with his rendition of The Proclaimers’ “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”, and it’s the only awards show that sees former Love Islanders and British daytime TV stars mix with global superstars. It’s a field day for @loveofhuns.

As for the red carpet, the BAFTAs are usually a slightly more subdued sartorial affair. Upholding the prudish English stereotype, it’s a very proper shindig, with little-to-no risky skin-baring (maybe it’s too cold?). Typically, the real glitz is saved for the Oscars, which take place three weeks from today, so we’ll have to hang tight for the more daring looks – even Paddington was still sporting his everyday duffle coat.

The highlights of this evening’s carpet all had one thing in common: Matthieu Blazy’s Chanel. As seen on Tilda Swinton, Gracie Abrams, Jessie Buckley and Maya Rudolph, the Chanel gowns were plucked fresh from Blazy’s debut and pre-fall collections, bringing old Hollywood to London’s Southbank. Best Actor hopeful Timothée Chalamet turned to custom Givenchy once again – just like he did at last year’s Oscars, though it’s yet to bring him good luck. Former Dazed cover star Chase Infiniti was also a standout, wearing custom Louis Vuitton, which we could’ve predicted, since she just became an ambassador of the brand.

Infiniti’s co-star, Teyana Taylor (who wins every carpet she attends) decided to go British for the nation’s biggest awards, wearing a plum Burberry gown, paired with Tiffany jewellery. Elsewhere, nominated alongside Taylor for Best Supporting Actress, Sinners’ Wunmi Mosaku was also representing British design, donning an electric blue Ahluwalia dress. Other honourable mentions go to Noah Jupe in Jacquemus, Audrey Nuna in Thom Browne and a personal favourite, Saja Kilani wearing Louis Trotter’s Bottega Veneta.
