From celebrities like Julia Fox embracing her hair on the red carpet, to collections such as John Galliano’s Margiela haute couture and Kim Shui’s AW25, pubic hair has been slowly building its reputation as one of the year’s hottest accessories. Then, of course, Kim Kardashian jumped on the full bush bandwagon, launching a Skims merkin, ideal for anyone who regrets getting laser. Now, Kerry Taylor Auctions is adding to the trend with its latest offering: Leigh Bowery’s 1987/88 merkin. Made from the crown of an old wig, the legendary performance artist was known to have glued the makeshift merkin to his nether regions, giving the illusion of a woman’s crotch (this also meant that he couldn’t urinate the entire night). It’s due to be sold on Dec 9 as part of Kerry Taylor’s Passion for Fashion auction, and it’s not the only item from Bowery’s personal wardrobe going under the hammer. Being sold as a pair along with the merkin will be the artist’s famous “starfish” hooded crop top, estimated to go for between £8,000 to £12,000. Then there’s the notorious 1986 “Aunt Jemima” ensemble, inspired by a woman wearing a checked dress who advertised a pancake mix, expected to reach £15,000 to £20,000. There’s the 1992 “memento mori” look, including the skull headpiece, which featured on the cover of Another Man’s Winter/Spring 2025 issue, as well as the 1993 “Mrs Peanut” outfit and several individual pieces too. “These pieces exemplify Bowery's unique and boundary-pushing creativity and are extraordinarily rare, as many of his costumes did not survive the long nights at Taboo!” explains the auction house.
