It’s finally that time of year again: Halloween. Or, as some call it, ‘Gay Halloween’.

Gone are the days of dressing up as a sexy black cat, nurse or police officer (you should never dress up as a cop, ew); we’ve evolved. Now, the holiday is all about embodying your favourite niche internet meme or hyper-specific cultural reference that only a handful of people will understand. The joy lies in the confusion: half the room stares blankly, the other half lose their minds as they see you dressed as the Pinterest core baby-deer-angel being offered a cigarette. Last year, there was significant discourse about how meme costumes prioritise social media attention over genuine connection with people in real life, and that’s probably still true. But ‘Gay Halloween’ costumes are so goddamn funny, and maybe that’s reason enough to keep doing it.
