Shortly after Maison Margiela announced Miley Cyrus as its first-ever celebrity face in 37 years, Kim Kardashian floated through the streets of Venice wearing a draped grey creation from Glenn Martens debut couture collection. For a house so entrenched in ideas of anonymity, this seems to be an interesting new direction for the brand – it’s no coincidence that two of the biggest stars in the world had their own Margiela moments within hours of each other. That’s obviously not to say that celebrity has been foreign to the Margiela brand until now – the Kardashians and Jenners were mainstays at John Galliano’s catwalk shows, Cardi B was at Martens’ Paris debut, and Galliano dressed practically everyone at the 2024 Met Gala, including Kardashian. However the new campaign and Kardashian’s Venice Film Festival moment has reinvigorated the online conversation about Margiela embracing celebrities even more. What do you think of the potential new direction?
