Known for his signature rock ‘n’ roll rebellious aesthetic, the British designer belongs to a generation of creatives whose work defined the underground club scene of the 80s, appearing on the likes of David Bowie, Mick Jagger and Madonna, Honouring his roots for his grand homecoming, he presented a collection inspired by the nostalgia of Britain's best punk era. Below we broke down all the key takeaways from the evening. IT WAS HOSTED IN THE TATE Courtesy of John Richmond The show took over the Tate Modern, a fitting choice for a designer whose work has always straddled art and subversion. Tapping into his longtime anti-establishment stance, the location was the perfect place to revamp and mark his return. THE 80S ARE BACK Courtesy of John Richmond For the collection itself, Richmond celebrated all things British street style, music, and subculture. Pairing structured leather trenches with distressed denim with punk-era detailing, the collection was a nod to Richmond’s 80s heyday – while evolving for today’s world with more refined silhouettes. Metallics, studs and dark velvets clashed with graphic tees featuring subversive slogans, while crystal-embellished boots and oversized belts honoured his maximalist taste. HE DEBUTED A FASHION FILM To mark his return, Richmond enlisted legendary photographer Jamie Morgan to shoot a lookbook and fashion film that ran throughout the evening. Styled by Dazed’s very own Mirko Pedone, the lookbook was projected onto screens inside the Tate. Directed by Robin Derrick, the short film featured a rendition of The Verve’s Bittersweet Symphony by Ren. Watch the film above. THE NIGHT ENDED WITH AN AFTERPARTY Courtesy of John Richmond During and after the presentation, the space doubled up as a party venue for guests to mingle, dance and celebrate. DJs Tiffany Calver, Keyrah, Icykof kept the night going. Head to the gallery above to see images from the night and check out the lookbook. Escape the algorithm!
