In a recent interview with Dazed, godfather of goth Rick Owens pulled up a chair to discuss his collaboration with the Italian label Moncler, and in it revealed a long-held aspiration of his. When asked who he would want to play him in the film of his life, the US designer answered quickly and decisively: “Cher”.
“You didn’t even skip a beat with that answer”, we quipped back, before the designer revealed that he’d long thought about it and had the response ready to go. Owens then goes on to say how excited he was to have Cher at his SS23 show last September and had hoped to steal a selfie with her, but she was too busy being mobbed by a swarm of his own models.
We think Owens is making the perfect choice in the legendary entertainer. Cher is known for her shapeshifting aesthetic spanning a 50 year career, and would slip into his signature style with ease. The small matter of their differing genders would be no problem at all - just think of Cate Blanchett as Bob Dylan in I’m Not There, or Tilda Swinton as an Elizabethan nobleman in Orlando, and it’s clear that the Oscar-winning actress would do a stellar job.
Also in our interview with Owens, the designer chats about his new collection with Moncler, made from recycled nylon and ecological dyes, and discusses the giant metal sleep capsule he built for the collaboration, which sits somewhere between “a meat locker and an Ancient Egyptian sarcophagus”.
