...and other fashion news you missed
In 2014, Helmut Lang paid homage to the reverse cowboy (figuratively speaking) by printing a t-shirt with the word “cowboy” emblazoned in back-to-front lettering. That stroke of irreverence (which now goes for hundreds of pounds on resell sites) also happened to be the starting point for the brand’s AW23 collection, which conjureed the spirit of the wild west in bell bottoms, greasy shearling jackets, and harnesses. Presented within a one-off exhibition curated by Antwaun Sargent, the Gagosian director invited a slew of artists to reinterpret the cultural symbolism of the cowboy. That loaded icon, synonymous with heroism, masculinity, and colonialism, is being reconsidered by Awol Erizku, Daniel Obasi, Justen Leroy, Turiya Adkins, Devin B Johnson, and Quay Quinn Wolf at the Hannah Traore Gallery in New York until February 23.
In other fashion news this week, Copenhagen Fashion Week came to a close, while Son Heung-Min was announced as the face of adidas’ new Sportswear imprint, and Phoebe Philo set a date for her big fashion comeback. Cardi B offered to save celebrities from their dire red-carpet looks, Quil Lemons released his first fashion collection, and Balenciaga outlined its partnership with the National Children Alliance. Elsewhere, Kendrick, Doja Cat, and Tems came out hot in British designers at the Grammys, while Shygirl and John Glacier fronted Burberry’s first campaign under Daniel Lee.
